Hanging... So good for the shoulders and grip strength! . I haven't been hanging or climbing since I was a kid, so I had to start from scratch... A few months ago my grip was so weak I couldn't hang for more than 5 seconds. . Most of my movement practice these days is not structured. I do what I can while baby plays around (she plays so I play too haha) or after she goes to bed at night. So the progress to be able to do what I'm doing here compared to where I started has come out of a super relaxed practice that's completely unattached to outcome. It's just about mindful play and having some fun hanging around and doing handstands!... Because it feels good! . I say this just to say that any movement is beneficial and the body will respond if you are fairly consistent with it. It doesn't have to be a super intense workout in a gym! In fact the body responds better and faster when it's not over pushed and is allowed to stay in a relaxed state with an easy breathe. This is the opposite of what most of us think a workout should be, or how we think we need to work in order to build strength. I like to think of effortless effort while I'm moving. So as soon as it feels heavy and hard and I can feel my breath and muscles tighten up and grip, I know I've gone too far. . The result: a body that feels free and easy, that responds and changes quickly with the stimulus I throw at it. . My current fave sequence for targeting those deep abdominal muscles, the transversus abdominis in particular for me... Not to mention my super weak hip flexors! (Check both vids for the full sequence)... . Press hand into thigh, thigh into hand until the abdominals engage. First same hand as leg, then changing to opposite hand after a few reps. Making sure to move in a range that can be controlled. . I try to move with effortless effort. So there's no gripping, holding my breath or tensing up to make the movement happen. . #handstandjourney . Got this idea from @garagegymgirl... I'm working on the vertical line now and this little back and forth helps build strength and responsiveness to help me resist falls. I have to pull myself away from the wall with control using my strength to (hopefully) find the vertical. . I find pulling myself from falling back is the hardest. That's where I fall most when I'm away from the wall, so that's my weaker area. This targets that perfectly! . On a completely different note, sometimes doing 5 minutes of handstand work in the evening after baby goes to bed is the only me time I get. It's been a bit challenging lately finding time to connect with myself to replenish my energy. I know I need it and it makes me a better mom and teacher (and just a better all round human being!), but carving out that time isn't always easy. I get down on myself too, like I should be better at making time for myself, which ends up being a downward spiral of what all I could be doing 'better'. I haven't quite figured out the 'solution'. I guess it's just to know that these things ebb and flow and to do the best you can with the cards you're dealt on any given day. Staying present and not getting hung up on what wasn't done yesterday, but instead focussing on what can be done today, right now. There's always time for a deep connecting breath. . Breathe. . Anyone else experience times like this? How do you keep your energy up and your spirits high when there just isn't alot of time to do the things you need to do to self care? . #tb I fell on Easter Sunday and hurt my foot doing this exact thing... No bueno! . I was trying not to fall on the munchkin so I fell super awkward and spent my Easter hopping around on one foot. . The foot is feeling better now so I'm ready to get back on track! Things are progressing nicely, I'm super stoked! Finally handstands are a real thing for me! . It's been an interesting journey of getting out of my own way to stay consistent and persistent with working on this skill. This idea of 'letting go' has become something of a fad these days. You hear everyone saying it, as though it's easy. But how do we let go? Can you tell someone else how to do it?... Not really. Everyone has to kind of figure it out for themselves. . Something that helps me navigate this idea of 'letting go' is trust. It's a theme that has come up a lot for me lately. . Trust. It's simple, but not easy. Cultivating trust in self and trust in the universe is something we must practice. Practice, not just when sh*t hits the fan, which is when it will be most illusive. It's the little things we do on a daily that helps us cultivate trust. Listening to our inner selves, allowing ourselves to let even the simplest things unfold without our meddling when we're not needed. Find moments in the mundane day to day things we do. . So when the big tough things come, as they always do, we have already had some practice trusting and letting go. It's never easy, but maybe we can see that things are going exactly as they are supposed to and we can have some ease knowing and trusting deep down that things will be ok. . Things will be ok.
